Deanna Kepka, PhD, MPH, is a Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) investigator and an assistant professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Utah. She is a member of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences (CCPS) research group Kepka’s main research interests are the gaps in health care access and quality for vulnerable populations. She focuses specifically on preventing cervical cancer among US Latinas, who have higher rates of cervical cancer than most other racial and ethnic groups. Utah has one of the lowest rates of completion of the HPV vaccination series in the country, and Kepka’s work with CCPS and the College of Nursing intends to develop more effective patient-provider interventions that will help increase this rate. She is also dedicated to improving health care services for cancer prevention and control among minority and underserved populations. Kepka has worked with teams in at-risk communities, promoting positive health behaviors in Jamaica, Chicago, North Carolina, and Washington. Since 2007, she has worked with Hispanic and Latino communities in Mexico, Peru, Chicago, North Carolina, and Washington. She has also developed a radionovela (a Spanish short story broadcast) that successfully improved knowledge and sparked interest in the HPV vaccine among rural Latino parents in the United States. Kepka was most recently a posdoctoral fellow in the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, where she received the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Merit Award. She received her PhD in health services from the University of Washington School of Public Health and her MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Cervical Cancer Survivor, Lived Experience Expert , and Patient Advocate
My cervical cancer journey started 17 years ago. From the time my symptoms started, until my radical hysterectomy, was 3 months. My tumor was 90% of my cervix. I have volunteered with ACS for 14 years. I started participating in the Relay for Life as a team captain. I joined the committee for my local Relay for life 1 year later and was on the committee for 3 years. I have had my story shared in local newspapers, social media sites for ACS of Minnesota. In Minnesota, I participated in planning and putting on an event called “Turn it Teal Day” in Jan of 2023. With a lot of help from ACS, we had 12 buildings in the Twin Cities area, light up teal. We were able to get the Governor of Minnesota, and my local Mayor, provide us with a Government proclamation declaring Jan 19, 2023 Cervical Cancer Awareness Day. I recently relocated to Texas. I am working with an amazing team with ACS in Austin, Texas to spread awareness of cervical cancer as well as promoting ACS and what they do. The work that I do with ACS, is very important and special to me. I advocate for the HPV vaccine and for awareness of cervical cancer. I feel that everyone needs to know about HPV and how it relates to cervical cancer. In my free time, I enjoy acrylic painting, spending time with my boyfriend and our 3 dogs. We recently adopted our second special needs animal. I am expecting my first grandchild in February and I am very excited!

Tiera's advocacy work is both extensive and impactful. She has shared her story and insights in Prevention Magazine, local cancer community centers, and as a valued participant on award-winning hospital patient panels, where she works to bridge the crucial gap between healthcare providers and patient care. Her dedication to promoting regular screenings and raising awareness is woven into the fabric of her personal business, where she emphasizes the importance of womb health through her handcrafted waist beads. “I seize every opportunity to encourage my clients to prioritize their health by scheduling screenings,” she affirms. Residing in Ohio with her husband and three daughters, Tiera is a passionate supporter of Cervivor's mission, taking on leadership roles in ground-level advocacy work and serving as a lead for Cervivor Noir.
